You may have noticed the proud sponsor of BreastCancer Network of Strength logo at the end of this week's alli television ads. But, you might not be familiar with the organization because they used to be called Y-ME National BreastCancer Organization

BreastCancer Network of Strength provides support to people touched by breastcancer through its YourShoes 24/7 Support Center.  As part of this center, you can talk to someone (1-800-221-2141) who has walked in your shoes because all of the peer counselors are breastcancer survivors. 

Having worked on the project, I can tell you the passion and enthusiasm that the organization has for helping those touched by breastcancer. I am proud to say that I wear their pin everyday.  Like many others, I have already provided their Support Center number this year to someone dear to me.

Oh, BTW, the BreastCancer throughout the post is not a typo, but the only way that our system would allow the first word to be used.

Tapping into the universal benefits of exercise

There are numerous articles that link exercise to a disease risk reduction.  Yet, it's been stated that 50 percent of Americans don't get enough exercise. 

Exercise is an important element of any weight loss program, but as the alli Companion Guide states, "you don't have to hit the gym or hire a personal trainer to make a real difference in your health."

To help with your exercise effort, videos from exercise physiologist, Garrett Roberts, have been added to myalli.com. 

Garrett's videos include in-home daily routines as well as cardio workouts for the gym. He also emphasizes that starting slow is sometimes best. "You have to start developing a fitness foundation. Once a foundation is built you can start setting other goals," he said.

Welcome to alliconnect, year two

Hello. I’m Karen Scollick and I’m pleased to be leading the new Behavioral Science team for GSK Consumer Healthcare, which includes alli as well as our smoking control products.  As I mentioned in my bio, I enjoy sailing and I see a number of parallels between sailing and my new role.

Christopher Columbus stated, “By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one may unfailingly arrive at his chosen goal or destination.” As we have celebrated alli’s first birthday this summer, we have heard from hundreds of alli users who are transforming their lives. Many of these stories are captured in our just-launched allicircles community as well as our special anniversary book, “we lost it.”

Behind the images and stories that summarize these journeys exist poignant recounts of challenges that have been faced, from overcoming cravings and other temptations to managing treatment effects and increasing simple daily activity levels. We can all learn and grow from their candid comments.

Whether your weight loss journey has been smooth sailing all the way or with periods of choppy waters, my team and I would like to hear from you. We can all learn and grow together on the alli journey toward a healthy body and lifestyle.

Get in the circle

Expanding your family with a new baby is usually a joyous time. For alli user Laura Lee Mills, something was different with baby number three. At 27 years-old, Laura Lee felt like the fat friend at a party and started alli the next day.

"I didn't have any treatment effects. It's really as hard as you make it. If you stick to the diet you'll be fine," she said to me over an alli-friendly lunch. Laura has lost 48 pounds with alli, and has traded her size 15 pants for a size five. She says life has gotten easier.

"I can play with my kids now, and I feel good about it," she said.

Shed the pounds, share the clothes

"For women, clothing matters. How she is dressed when she walks into an interview affects her self-esteem, confidence and her power as a woman," said Joi Gordon, CEO for Dress for Success Worldwide (DFS), a global non-profit organization that provides work attire and career support to disadvantaged women. 

For this reason, we are encouraging those who lost weight to give their professional attire to the local DFS as they lose weight. So far, approximately 35,000 units of clothing have been donated through this campaign. 

Experts say keeping pre-weight loss clothes isn't good for your new healthy lifestyle, so why not donate them to a great cause? And, as part of the support, alli has also donated $75,000 to Dress for Success Worldwide to support its clients.

Millions of alli users are losing it

Connie D. looked like she'd always been comfortable in her size four skin as she strutted the runway in her custom black dress, made for her by Project Runway's Laura Bennett, at last week's Millions Event. To date Connie has lost a total of 60 lbs. and looks and feels great. But, she knows the road does not end here. "When I made this decision, it wasn't for a short time; it's for a lifetime."

Nearly 50 successful alli users gathered in the Big Apple to share their stories as a part of the one-year alli anniversary. Connie and 13 other alli users are telling their success stories in a short book titled, "We Lost It."  The book is available on allimillions.com. Most of the real-life stories, including Connie's, are also on myalli.com

Changes for alliconnect

In the marketing profession, change is a constant.  At alliconnect, we've recently had a change in leadership.

Founding alliconnect blogger, Steve Burton, recently resigned from his position as Vice President of Weight Control for GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare. Steve was instrumental to the creation of alliconnect blog and his blog entry on his oops experience is still one of the most visited posts to date. 

You will soon be introduced to Karen Scollick, the newly appointed Vice President for US Weight Control at GSK.  Karen has held many leadership positions in the GSK Consumer Healthcare business, the most recent as the General Manager for GSK Consumer Healthcare Canadian and Puerto Rico.

Look for her first post on alliconnect in the coming weeks.

Meet Cheryl, alli user and pharmacist

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to meet alli user Cheryl H. as we filmed alli's latest commercial in her house (yes, in her house).  We chose her for the ad after reading the story that she submitted to the real stories section of myalli.com. 

Cheryl works as a pharmacist at a local independent pharmacy, she is married with two teenagers, and volunteers in her community. Like many of us, she juggles a busy schedule and did not want to take something that would reduce her ability to focus.

Being an alli user who is also a pharmacist, she is also able to share her experience with people that come into her pharmacy for help.

"When people come into the pharmacy and ask questions about any medication, it's always easier to talk about their concerns when I have actually had a personal experience with the medication myself. Since I have had personal experience with alli, I know all the ins and outs. I just tell them, if you eat right it's going to work for you, too. It's something that you're going to be able to do to keep the weight off because you change the way you eat. Unlike with other diet medications, Alli motivates you to make the necessary lifestyle changes that will make it possible to keep the weight off."

Entertain with healthy meals that don't sacrifice taste

In January, I wrote about the alli calendar which directs readers to three episodes of Trend Watch on Vogue.TV. The first episode focuses on spring entertaining with celebrity chef and RD Melissa Petitto

Melissa used produce from local farmer's markets to create the menu. Spring lends itself to fresh produce no matter where you live. 

For those tempted by the food in the Trend Watch episode, most of the recipes were selected from alli cookbook or The alli Diet Plan. Or, more recipes are available in the healthy eating section of myalli.com or in your favorite low-fat cookbook or magazine.

How can your pharmacist help you?

A usual trip to the pharmacy goes a little like this. Walk in, go to the counter, and hand in the prescription. Wait 10, maybe 15 minutes. Pay for your script, grab the bag.  Next, out the door and start thinking about dinner. Pretty typical, right?

Surprisingly, yes. The 2008 Parata Prescription Survey of the nation's 225 million prescription-takers found 80% of people spend less than two minutes talking to their pharmacist when they pick up their prescriptions and 45 percent don't talk to pharmacists at all.

Your pharmacist can be a great source of information.  They can:

  • Determine if you are taking your medicine correctly.
  • Counsel on potential drug interactions, preventing overdose and unwanted side effects.
  • Provide prescription and nonprescription medicine information.  For example, when we launched alli, many pharmacists received resources that included information relevant to the alli program.

So the next time you go to the pharmacist, ask questions. Remember a pharmacist is the most accessible health care professional in America.

What’s wrong with quick and easy weight loss?

Anyone who’s looked around the weight loss section of a drugstore or watched the ads on TV knows that some products promise to help you lose weight quickly and easily. The problem is that little, if any, evidence supports these claims – and some of them are outrageous.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, more Americans are victimized by weight loss fraud than any other activity they survey. Make no mistake about it. The FTC and the FDA work hard to address this problem, but more products keep flooding into the market, making unsupported claims.

I believe this situation needs to change. I’ve spent a lot of time listening to consumers and experts on weight and health who want to see it change, too. 

Perhaps you’ve heard that GSK recently joined three organizations in petitioning the FDA to change how it regulates dietary supplements for weight loss. The three organizations are the American Dietetic Association, The Obesity Society and Shaping America’s Health.

What does GSK get out of this?
There are those who have speculated that this is some kind of anti-competitive effort by us. 

Let’s be clear. There will always be competition for alli.  People have plenty of options for sound, proven approaches to lose weight. This petition is about setting a solid standard of proof for products that claim to help overweight people lose weight.

Consumers will benefit because they will be able to choose among weight loss products that are proven to work. 

When unproven products promise quick and easy weight loss, everyone suffers. All the hype makes it harder for people to find real help to lose weight and improve their health. It creates an environment where people start to doubt even modest, truthful claims. The entire weight loss category, benefits by reducing this doubt.

Myths behind men's health

As the book says, "Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus." This is no different for weight loss.  Generally speaking, men and women approach weight loss differently and have different favorite foods

But, can men eat hearty and still eat healthy?  Yes. In fact, this is one of the questions included in the American Dietetic Association's Men's Health: Fact vs. Fiction guide.  You can eat healthy and still have some steak, potatoes and eggs. 

Pat Baird, RD and moderator for the alli message board adds, "Whether it's steak or chocolate there IS a place for all foods in a healthy diet. Choose foods wisely, enjoy them in moderation, and include foods from ALL the food groups. Then smaller portions are realistic."

Nutrition, it's all about what you eat

For some, the most challenging aspect of losing weight, or keeping it off, is making informed food choices. March is National Nutrition Month and a great time to learn more about making smart eating decisions.   

 

As part of National Nutrition Month, the American Dietetic Association provides lots of information on their site, including an interactive quiz and games.  I also wanted to share some tips provided by Lisa Jones, MA, RD, LDN. She's a dietician with the American Dietetic Association, with 14 years of experience.  She recommends:

  • If portions are confusing, try drawing them. Sketch an 8-inch plate, cut it in half, and then cut the left side in half again. The right side should be veggies, and the left side should be a protein serving the size of your palm with a starch like rice or pasta.
  • Stop staring at food labels, just check the ingredient list. "If it's not in the first five ingredients there's probably not enough of it to make a difference." The healthy stuff, that is.
  • For help understanding how to personalize the food pyramid, visit MyPyramid.gov and use the Menu Planner tool.

Part III: The Motons' experience battling obesity

In the final part of our spotlight on African American health we'd like to introduce Joe and Jackie Moton.

After 18 years of marriage and weight struggles, it wasn’t until returning from a vacation last year that the Motons took their health seriously. “We looked at our pictures and we did not like what we saw,” said Jackie Trapps-Moton, 46.

Joe Moton, at his heaviest weighed 420 pounds. and Jackie weighed in at 276 pounds.  Here's their story.

Q: What was the most difficult change you made when deciding to lose weight?
Jackie: The biggest thing we learned was how to cook things differently.  Traditionally, everything we ate was fried.  But now we bake, grill, broil - we don’t fry anything. 

Q: Joe, as a man were you hesitant about dieting?
A: I’m the most non-dieting person you’d ever meet.  I saw it as something women do. But, I had to get real about food.  There was a problem.

Q: What are some cultural issues African Americans deal with when losing weight?
Joe: We think it’s too expensive to eat healthy, when that’s far from true. 
Jackie:  We tend to think the food is not going to taste good.  But I was surprised that everything I made from alli (the diet plan) tasted great and it looked healthy.

During our hour long conversation, the Motons touched on everything from having to pull one another back from the fridge to learning how to be content from eating rather than over eating.  Both have committed to an exercise regimen and it shows.  Jackie lost 54 pounds and Joe has gone from a 52 inch to a 42 inch waist.  And, the couple says they’re not going back. 

“What it really came down to is we wanted to change the outcome of our lives, we want to live for our grandchildren,” Joe said.
