treatment effects are not only about wearing dark pants

Odds are, if you are reading this, you probably know what a treatment effect (TE) is and why they can happen. And yes, we have been very open about TEs in our marketing of alli. USA Today even writes about our sense of scatalogical humor.

But is there really a benefit to using a product that could result in treatment effects? Many cynics say no, but new users of alli disagree. Some people have even been rethinking treatment effects. Not because they're unpleasant, but because TEs are keeping them honest. The USA Today article makes that point too.

What do you think? Can treatment effects increase motivation for people really committed to losing weight?

Comments:

Awareness of treatment effects definitely increases self-discipline. Without alli, it’s all too easy to splurge on a high-fat meal or dessert, promising yourself that you’ll make up for it later with just a salad at the next meal or a hard workout the next day – and, of course, you don’t. With alli, you know what’s going to happen if you eat that fat, and that knowledge makes it much easier to resist excessive consumption of high-fat foods.

I know that the treatment effects motivate me to stick with the low-fat eating plan. Keeping the food diary and tracking calories and fat grams has made my hyper-aware of everything that goes in my mouth just to avoid the TEs. Plus, I've made positive changes in my eating and exercise habits just so I'm not "wasting" the money that I've spent on Alli. I'm learning a lot about nutrition and that's information that will stay with me even after I've met my goal.

I call Alli "The Enforcer" because it's like having a diet coach with you 24 hours a day. I've lost 5 pounds in 19 days with Alli and while that may not be as good as some people are doing it's certainly better than I've ever done on my own.

I am having a really hard time with this.  If you eat bad foods and gain weight, have health problems, joint problems, and high cholesterol is that not a clear "treatment effect" from the bad eating?  Is a drug that gives you uncontrolled diarrhea when you eat too much fat really the same as a "diet coach"?  Is the long term effect of alli that you stay away from fat because you remember how bad it was that time when you had your "accident"?  My concern here is that people are only taking the time to learn about proper nutrition and lifestyle choices because they are in danger of pooping their pants in public and that is NOT a good reason and NOT a reason that leads to healthy long term change.

Lynda,

I haven't had an "accident", thank you very much, because I've been following the program and not just blindly swallowing the pills. The support that I've gotten from the MyAlli site and other Alli bloggers has been tremendous. We're learning and losing together in a (mostly) positive atmosphere.

I don't understand your hostility when people learning about proper nutrition and lifestyle choices. If we're making positive steps, learning about nutrition and improving our lives, why are you so eager to condemn us? We've simply chosen a different path to wellness than you.

I think it's all about the TEs for me. I've had major success with a mainstream diet program, but had plateaued and I attribute the plateau to my misbehavior whilst dining out. Well, Alli makes sure I don't do that.

Fine, TEs while at home and next to the shower is one thing, but being miles away from home, in a fancy dress, and with company? NEVER. So, I eat wisely.

I also pair Alli with exercise videos (3-4 times a week) and a sensible diet (still on the mainstream diet program that I had plateaued on--high fiber, low fat, moderate portions).

Alli has become the little voice in my head telling me...JUST SAY NO TO THE FRIES!

Week one, down 2 pounds. This is a breakthrough as I've been stuck at the same weight for 2 months now.

No TE's here either. I am learning how to eat right because I am following the food plan on the myalli.com website. I am taking alli to increase me fat/weight loss. I don't want TEs, so I am not going over my allotted fats. If there were no TE's would I cheat? Possibly. But now that I've learned more about the ADA diet and am following it, I don't have the urge to cheat.

I have a concern here or moreover a confussion and maybe someone can bring me out of it. I have started the pills 4 days ago and since then I have accomodated my diet with low fat, but before I started I was eating mainly from the Indian restaurants non-stop and having  caffe lattes with extra wip cream every single morning.

My concern.....Is it normal for me not to have any TEs so far? Some of my friends who have started the pills had warned me about the "oily" TEs, and that was one of the reasons why I have postponed my Alli diet for 2 weeks. But finally I got the courage to start it with the fear on the back side of the body, but so far ..... nothing as "oily accidents". Is this normal?

Thanks..Di.

I was also "afraid' to start the program until I was sure that I could stay focused, and be successful.  My friend had been on the program for 6 weeks; she had TE's 30 minutes after every meal in the begining.  She says that part of the weight loss is this great 'empty-down there' feeling.  I was almost looking forward to that.  I have not had TE, in fact I feel a bit constipated.  Am I eating the wrong foods?  I have lost 6 pounds!  Part of my weight loss success is the change in diet that the program recomends, and of course cutting out fast food and fried foods.  I starting adding 1/2 an apple or some broccoli to my lunches.  Any suggestions?  Do others feel "backed up" instead of the having the TE?

I may just be more away of my body because I am wondering after each meal if I'll have the TE.

I have referred 2 friends to the program and they haven't haven't had any accidents or problems either.  We are all very happy with the program!

Thanx

C

No treatment effects for me. I am following the plan however. I have lost 10 ils in 3 weeks. I love Alli, but I agree you have to want to do this for you. I do.

I dont have any TE's... does mean Alli is not working right 4 me?
